I believe that there’s no secret rules book that anyone should follow regarding any interior space. But since we live in a time where we need to adopt a more positive easy lifestyle, here are 10 tips I always follow when creating any space.
1: Storage & Shelves: the more the better
Trust me in this: you can never have enough storage closets so the more you have the happier you’ll be. You can always replace a big closet with lower cabinets and floating shelves that can be more functional to any space.
2: Sliding Panels
If you cannot throw them away… just hide them! Sliding panels are always the perfect answer to hide a messy closet that you didn’t have time to fix. Even if it’s in a living room, you can add interesting panels to your closet with an artistic touch (paintings, wallpapers, wood textures…) or a mirrored effect. I’m not a big fan of replacing panels with curtains since some people intend to be curious to see what’s behind.
3: Kitchen tools divider
Aka kitchen’s heaven! You can find dividers for plates, cups and other kitchen accessories that are THE life savior.
4: Layer your lighting
The key to a successful interior is the lighting. Hence, distribute and use many lighting sources that will be helpful for your different needs. You need ambient light for mood, direct light for reading, cooking… The more you avoid the central lighting, the more impressing interior you will have.
And don’t forget to lighten up your closet. Try it and you’ll thank me later!!
5: Plants… and I mean REAL plants!
Nothing cheers up a lonely corner in a big room like a touch of green. Choose wisely the perfect plant that fits your room mood and insert it in your living space. #ThinkGreen
6: Mix up your seating
There’s no rule that forces you to have the same seats at your dining table. So why not switch up your seating and add more life with non identical chairs if the style of the house allows it.
7: Allow your furniture to breath
No need to fill out your space with crowded items and lots of furniture. Let your fittings and furniture stand out in your interior with a free space around them. This way they will add more value in contrary to an overcrowded space.
8: Add some artwork
Art pieces are always the cherry on top of any interior. I recommend to always spice-up your walls with some artwork that reflects the style that suits the room. From classic to modern paintings, quotes, family pictures… Anything works.
9: Furniture & Rug dilemma
I usually follow three basic ways to arrange furniture on a rug:
– the all on the rug: if the carpet is large enough to fit all your furniture
– the all off the rug: perfect for small spaces only
– front feet on the rug: only allowing the front legs of the furniture on the rugs and by this way defining the space without enclosing it.
10: Always have a Focal Point
Any room should have its center of attraction. Be bold! Make your own focal point a charismatic attraction for a wow effect.
These were some of my tips from the non-existing rules of interior!
