Discovering and Rediscovering are two keywords that play a key role in the 2017 edition of the Beirut Art Fair (BAF) that will gather along side talents attracting the attention on contemporary landscape, art lovers, art collectors and a large number of international galleries that will be present showcasing various forms of art. A rich variety and fusion.
The 8th edition of BAF was officially launched on June 1st and it will take place from 21 to 24 September focusing on three main objectives:
– Fostering a spirit of expansion and renewal
– Promoting the discovery of young talents
– Unfolding a new perspective on the recent history of creation and collecting in Lebanon
Just after the press conference, I had the pleasure to chitchat with some of the international galleries that will be present during the fair and they all answered on one question:
1- Hajer Azzouz, Galerie La maison de la plage – Tunisia
BECAUSE IT’S BEIRUT.
“Beirut is a platform of the future. As a Tunisian we have a lot of affinities with Lebanese people. We have a common resistance for art.”
2- Dominique Fiat, Galerie Dominique Fiat – France
BECAUSE BEIRUT IS A PLATFORM OF AN OPEN SPIRIT.
“I always had an eye on Beirut. Lebanese are such open minded people that travel a lot, value the true meaning of art, and have a great taste. You can find them implemented in so many countries and always cherishing the real value of art.”
3- Jeanne Dreyfus, Galerie Comparative – France
BECAUSE BEIRUT IS YOUTH.
“Beirut inspires the renewal. It’s a city where you can find a skeleton that is already fading next to a skeleton of something yet to be born. My aim is to rediscover modern artists while finding new talents.”
4- Pierre El Khoury, Galerie Nathalie Obadia – France, BelgiumBECAUSE IT’S AN EVIDENCE.
“My father is Lebanese and I always wanted to be part of the artistic scene in Lebanon. I always met Lebanese art collectors around the world so this time I decided to be present with them instead of welcoming them abroad.”
5- Chiara Bertini, Galerie Analix Forever – Switzerland
BECAUSE BEIRUT IS A CULTURAL FUSION.
“It is important to think otherwise especially because I work a lot on the themes of war, emigration and exile and I think Beirut is the best place to expose the work of such art.”
6- Jonathan Kugel, Galerie Jonathan F. Kugel – Belgium, United Kingdom
BECAUSE BEIRUT IS AN ADVENTURE THAT YOU HAVE TO LIVE.
“It’s a city I always wanted to discover and meet its talents with whom we might produce textile art together.”
And finally I asked this question to Laure d’Hauteville, founder and director of the fair.
BECAUSE IN ITS UNIQUENESS, BEIRUT IS A BEAUTIFUL PATCHWORK OF EVERYTHING.
“BEIRUT is the color of my life. It’s a story of Love and Family. All my childhood dreams became reality when I first came to Beirut. I discovered Lebanon through the eyes of the Lebanese. In Lebanon, we LIVE we LOVE we CRY. I’m in love with this country that is so precious to me. From it we can touch the world. Lebanon is a “world-city” that you cannot find anywhere else. It’s the country of colors, life and happiness.”
